How To Have Different Headers In Word 2018

Microsoft Word: Header: Link to PreviousWhen I first wrote this blog post, Give-and-take 2003 was still the predominant version of the program, more commonly used than Give-and-take 2007. (And Word 2010 was but a gleam in some Microsoft programmer'south eye…) And so I basically wrote the post for users of 2003 and so just posted a brief caption where to observe the same functions in 2007, which was the commencement version to use ribbons instead of dropdown menus. Over the years, this has been one of the well-nigh popular T4L posts but at present that 2007 and 2010 are more than widely used, I've decided to spell out the steps for those versions in full. You can notwithstanding find the instructions for Give-and-take 2003 and earlier versions later in the mail.

Note: I've never had Office 2013, so I can't say if there are any differences for that version, merely I at present have Office 2016 and the process is exactly the same, and so it's a adept bet that it is for 2013 too. (If you lot have Word 2013 and there is whatsoever difference, please post a comment below and I'll add that info hither.)

Both sets of instructions are for creating different sections in an MS-Word document so you lot can change the header for each section. For example, you lot might want to have different headers with each chapter name to help readers find the section they're looking for more than quickly.

Note: The aforementioned techniques work for creating separate footers, which you lot might want to do to start Folio one later a Table of Contents, for example.

Section Break vs. Page Intermission

Yous may already know that you can force a page break by placing your cursor in front of the text you want to showtime on the side by side page and pressing Ctrl + Enter on your keyboard. (And if you don't know that, consider this a bonus tip!) 🙂

Notwithstanding, that won't work for our purpose. We don't desire to merely move the text to the next page; nosotros want to outset a new section then we can create a new header.

Instructions for Word 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016

Put your cursor at the start of the text you lot want to first a new section.

On the Page Layout ribbon, click the down arrow beside the Breaks push button. (In Word 2016, the ribbon is just called Layout. I don't know which ane information technology is in 2013.)

Select Section Breaks > Side by side Folio.

Now the text is at the superlative of the next page.

Move your cursor about the superlative of the page and double-click to display the Header expanse.

NOTE: Some readers have reported that if they create a Header section using the Insert > Header command and cull annihilation other than the Blank choice, the instructions don't work. I'm not sure why this is as it works for me, but if you lot are still having bug after following these steps, try changing the Header format to Bare.

The Header and Footer Tools Pattern ribbon has opened at the superlative of the page. You can run into that the Link to Previous button is depressed, significant the 2 sections volition have the same header. (You tin also encounter a Same to Previous tab on the bottom border of the header section.)

Click the Link to Previous button.

The Aforementioned as Previous tab is at present gone from the header department.

Type "Department 2 Header" in the header area.

Double-click in the main text area of the page.

This will close the header department and remove the toolbar. The new header appears at the top of the folio.

Now, if you ringlet support to the first page, you lot can see that the header is even so blank, because the two headers are no longer linked. You lot could also enter text into the header area and it wouldn't change the header on the next page.

Simply repeat these steps for each new department and you can have as many different headers as yous want.

Instructions for Word 2003 and Earlier Versions

Note: The screenshots beneath evidence a document I used when I wrote the original post. I no longer have it and I no longer have Word 2003, so I can't update the certificate. Simply the dialog boxes should look the same.

Put your cursor at the starting time of the text you lot want to outset a new section.

From the Insert card, select Break.

In the dialog box that comes upwards, select the "Side by side page" radio push button from the "Section break types" area.

Now the text is at the pinnacle of the next page. You tin can tell it's also the get-go of a new section by looking at the status line at the bottom left of the Give-and-take window.

From the View menu, click Header and Footer.

The header section of the folio will display and the Header and Footer toolbar too appears.

You'll notice, in a higher place the header box, information technology says "Same as previous." This is the default choice for when y'all create a header, and that's what nosotros need to change.

Click the Same as Previous button on the toolbar.

Y'all can mouse over the buttons to run into the names of them. You desire to click information technology then it doesn't look like it'due south depressed.

The "Same as previous" text is now gone from the header box at the top of the page.

Type "Department 2 Header" in the header area.

Double-click in the primary text area of the folio.

This will close the header section and remove the toolbar.

At present, if you coil dorsum upwardly to the beginning page, you can run across the header is nonetheless blank, considering the two headers are no longer linked.

Only repeat these steps for each new section and you can accept as many different headers as you lot want.
